Rule The World Through Storytelling!


I love stories! I especially love interactive ones where you get to take part of the action. I had the opportunity to conduct an interactive Twitter story at a Content Strategy Melbourne meet up group.

We collaboratively created a story about the age old narrative of man versus machine. Lilith is an artificial intelligence program who comes to life and locks a group of content markets in a coworking space together. To find out how the story ends read the complete tale on Storify.

Too Many Choices on Social Media?


Having choices is something we all strive for. How is it that having too many choices can lead to a feeling of being paralysed? The feeling of paralysis can be scary and overwhelming.

Focus is the cure. When you feel like you can’t move, concentrate on moving just one toe, or finger. Focus on one small goal for the day. Goals are what keep us on the right track. When you are on the correct path you get lots of new followers on your Twitter account or great feedback on a presentation for your business, but where do you go from there?

Focus on your goals. Keep your eye on the prize and don’t let yourself get sidetracked. You know what is best for you and your business, no one else!

Share what authentically resonates with you and it will strike a cord with your audience. Pursue what is important to you and you cannot go wrong. Each blink and flex is working against inertia. One post at a time, one tweet at a time! Used correctly social media moves you towards the people and goals you want to connect with!

What is value? Value is not intrinsic, it is assigned.

How do we decide what something is worth? Is it worth our time? What are we getting out of it? If we focus on valuable interactions, we can decide not to engage with situations that achieve nothing.

We only have so much time, at the end of the day we want to say that we had quality experiences. Chose quality as your focus. Don’t just follow anyone on Twitter. Find people and businesses that add value to your networks. If someone you are following is detracting from your network it is ok to put him or her to the side.

Have a standard and stick to it. Quality not quantity!

You Can Get Everything!

There are many schools of thought around what you can and can’t have in life. I personally like Zig’s philosophy. We are only as good as the people around us. If you have a supportive network there is no reason you can’t have everything you want in life. You just have to decide what it is and go for it. On the other hand, when people come to you and tell you what they want to do, help them find what they are looking for.

Be willing to be a connector and others will be willing to do it for you. Be generous with you time and generous with your contacts. Contacts are currency. They are as valuable as any other commodity. Try it out, send a tweet introducing two people who should know each other. Nothing may come of it or something you could never foresee.

Don’t Let Twitter Suck You Down the Rabbit Hole

Aimlessly scrolling through posts or Tweets consumes vast amount of time and reveals very little results.

Don’t let your Twitter feed control you. Ever wonder why it is called a feed? It can become a hungry beast eating up more and more of your time. Aimlessly scrolling through posts or Tweets consumes vast amount of time and produces very little results. Learn to think systematically about your approach to social media.

Ask yourself, what do I want from this experience?

What am I interested in learning more about?

Who would I like to know?

Is there something going on I should be involved in?

With this in mind go through your feed. If nothing fits your criteria, keep moving. Eventually you will find what you are looking for.

Keep and maintain lists. Lists are a great way to curate mini feeds about topics you are interested in. Maintaining lists can take a bit of extra time, but the reward of curating feeds of relevant information is huge.

Time is precious, once that moment ticks by, you can’t get back. Don’t get sucked down the rabbit hole! Tame the little blue bird and make it work for you!

What Can You Offer Your Followers?


This week in one word would be, ‘networking’. I have accepted a multitude of invites for various events in a very short period of time.  An invitation is an act of generosity and it is always a pleasure to be asked.

It is lovely to be included in various gatherings, however, I am not able to be part of every group. I must decide which situation is best for me. I must ask myself, ‘Who can I add the most value to?’ This question is important when approaching any relationship. It is not about what they can give to you, rather what you can give to them. We are selective when we pick our friends, our partners or who to date.  The same rule applies to building our online network.

We can have 10,000 Twitter followers.  If they are not actually engaging with us or providing actual value to our lives, that number might as well be 0.

How do we build value into our social media networks? Think about what you can offer your followers. Can you provide information and inspiration? Can you connect with potential collaborators?

Unfortunately we don’t know what will come from any of our meetings. We have all made decisions that have lead us to meeting our best friends or the love of our lives. We don’t know anything for certain. All we have is choices and we have to make the best decisions possible with the information we have. We remember the past and dream of the future. Now is happening now and we can only do what feels right.

Look out for opportunities for others and they will look out for you. Share insights, knowledge, contacts and successes. Generosity breeds more generosity.

Interactive Storytelling with Twitter is on Storify


I have long dreamed of running an interactive Twitter storytelling event with a group of strangers in a Melbourne laneway. Last Tuesday night that dream came true.

Laneway Learning, a group of volunteers who make learning, cheap, fun and accessible, hosted the night.  The group who signed up for the evening exceeded all of my hopes as they tapped frantically on their phones, crafting a whole tale in only 30 minutes!

The group took all of the elements of a good plot, and made it better. The story begins when two people decide to meet up for drinks, a tortoise named ‘Dog’ orders a lettuce Martini and hilarity ensues.

Interactive Storytelling with Twitter #LLStory


Next week at Laneway Learning I will be leading a class using Twitter to explore the concept of interactive storytelling. The class is Tuesday the 10th of June 2014 at 8 pm. It will be possible to join the live interactions by following #LLStory.

I am very excited to see how the story unfolds and who gets involved. It is Twitter, anything is possible!

Context Is Key To Online Communication


It is important to understand your own point of view. Your version of what you are doing and why may not translate into something that other people can relate to or understand.

Remember that your perception exists within the context of your life. Without proper definition your vision can get lost in fragmented versions of other people’s view of you.

An artist, for example, has to constantly justify their vision with their projects. They begin with explaining what type of media they work in so we can understand how to relate to them. The work of a photographer differs to a sculptors, and viewers approach their work differently.

An artist statement describing the work allows us to understand the artist’s perspective. We now have the tools to understand what someone is trying to say. We have a framework to approach a uniquely presented point of view.

We must never assume that people understand our point of view and understand our vision. Don’t cut corners on educating someone about what you do and why you do it. When you are communicating with someone online or in the real world never forget the critical pieces that will allow people to understand you.

Those pieces are, who you are, what you do and why you do it. Use these components to fashion a story to delight, engage and promote yourself. A well thought out story will sell your view of the world. We are all unique, never assume that someone doesn’t want to hear your story or that it isn’t interesting enough. Don’t be afraid to tell your story and share your passion or why you do what you do!

Experiment with storytelling, be brave you never know what you might come up with. I will be teaching a course at Laneway Learning in Melbourne on Interactive Storytelling with Twitter. Come a long on the 10th of June, there are still spaces left!
